The story behind the painting...

 

Curie was a British U Class sub (ex HMS Vox P67) lent to the FNFL (Free French Naval Forces).

She operated mainly against the Axe’s forces in the Mediterranian sea and is pictured here in Malta in 1943. In the background is the Corvette Class HMS Bluebell.

FNFL Curie was returned to the Royal Navy in 1946 and subsequently scrapped in 1949.
