The USS George Washington is the first of the nuclear powered missile submarines that formed part of the deterrent triad starting in the 1960s. She fired the first Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile while submerged in July of 1960 then after changing crews fired two more. The submarine made 55 deterrent patrols over the course of her life. She was stricken from the Navy List in 1986. The sail structure when removed during the recycling procedure was transported to the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
