The story behind the painting...

 

This reproduction is the first copy of a watercolor depiction of the USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN-750) leaving Lisbon, Portugal following a successful 7 month deployment in 2011.

The painting captures the ship and crew manning the maneuvering watch to get underway from the NATO pier at slack water - next destination Norfolk, Virginia. In this deployment, NEWPORT NEWS steamed nearly 42,000 nautical miles loosing not a single mission day to a material or personnel failure.
