When unstable Hydrogen Peroxide fuel in a practice torpedo caught fire, the Russian submarine Kursk and her crew were doomed. Within minutes the uncontrollable fire led to a catastrophic explosion in the torpedo room that obliterated the forward compartments and wiped out everyone apart from 23 crew in the aft section. Even for the immediate survivors their fate was sealed, since the after compartments leaked water through the propeller shafts seals (a common problem on the class) and rescue by the Russian fleet was slim.
