The story behind the painting...

Slowly breaking the surface the USS S-18 pumps her ballast tanks in calm water. These boats were designed during WWI and served as the backbone of the American submarine force in the Southwest Pacific during 1942 helping stem the advance of the Japanese toward Australia.
