Subject: German WWII U-boat U-998 under attack by a de Havilland Mosquito

The story behind the painting...

Lt. Johansen and Fern. Hulmen in 333 Sqn de Havilland Mosquito HP864 attack U998, commanded by KL Hans Fiedler, with depth charges on 16th June 1944 in Bergen, Norway.

U-998 was a Type VIIC/41 U-boat built in the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg and commissioned in October 1943.  This was the only recorded attack on this boat which left her sufficiently damaged that she was taken off patrol upon return to port and scrapped later that year.

333 Squadron RAF (Norwegian) was established as a detachment under the RAF 210 squadron, on 8 February 1942 by Captain Finn Lambrechts. The squadron was located in Woodhaven, Fife, Scotland.
